Washington Monument Needs Your Help

The Washington Monument in Baltimore (the original one mind you), needs your help in 2014.  In January we'll see her wrapped in scaffolding for almost an entire year.  With luck, she'll be ready for the monument lighting in December, but only with your help.  Here's the website where you can donate.  I can't wait to be able to climb up to the top again!

Here are some fun facts to leave you with.

  • The monument is marble outside, but has a red-brick interior.
  • It's 178 ft tall.  That's like lining up 356 large blue crabs (from point to point of the shell), which would cost you more than $1800 to buy.
  • There are 228 steps to get to the top, meaning you have to do 456 steps for the round trip (no elevator inside this monument).
  • The monument opened in 1829, making it 184 years old.
  • It's awesome, and deserves our support!

German Christmas Market Pictures

By Sarah D.

As you walk along the promenade, a sweet aroma slowly joins the brisk air and suddenly you are transported to the bustling streets of Munich, Rotenberg, or one of the many German cities that host a Weihnachtsmarkt, or Christmas Market. The cozy little wooden cottages selling goods create an Alpen atmosphere and the scent of roasting bratwurst beckons you into the large heated tent now covering most of West Shore Park.

Once inside, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the holidays with a European twist. Gaze through delicate glass tree balls, gather some new wall art and wool scarves, or venture to the back of the tent (where no pictures are allowed... sorry) to a section dedicated to handmade German ornaments, smokers, nutcrackers, and wooden Christmas Pyramids that move by the wind produced from candle flames. To get a full German experience, grab some Gluhwein (spiced wine), currywurst, a pretzel, a cone of toasted almonds and settle in at the picnic tables set up in the middle of the tent.

Baltimore Christmas Market

You may have noticed an awfully large tent going up at West Shore Park.  What's coming both inside and outside of this tent is reason to celebrate!  Baltimore is getting it's own German Christmas Market!  It opens on Thanksgiving Day (November 28th), and runs until Christmas Eve.  Nothing quite matches the music, sights, smells, and tastes of a German Christmas Market.  60 booths will be selling traditional treats, drinks, and gifts.  Here's the official website for more information, or follow them on Facebook to see pictures of the village coming to life!

Update on pricing (via the market's Facebook Page):  "Weekdays are always free! The first weekend (Nov 30, Dec 1st) is our Grand Opening Ceremony and also free. On the other weekends you can get a Holiday Pass ($5 adults, $3 kids) to get in. And if you buy your holiday pass you can always enter again!"

Battle of Baltimore

199 years ago today, the British started their invasion of Baltimore (though fighting started on the 13th) with 19 warships and 5,000 ground troops.  Over the course of the 4 day battle, between 79 and 99 men died (including the invading General Ross) while between 376 and 384 men were wounded.  Baltimore did what Washington DC was unable to do, defend itself from British forces.  It proved a turning point in the war, and ultimately helped to end the war on better terms for the US.  Here's a great article where you can read a bit more, and make sure to make it down to Fort McHenry itself!

On This Day in Baltimore - August 9th, 1958

Today marks the first installment of a new series to Bmore Interested, called On This Day in Baltimore… From time to time we thought it would be fun to look at forgotten events that happened over the years in our city, making it what it has become today.

Courtesy of The Baltimore Sun Historical Records and Pratt Library

August 9, 1958 marked the final day of “the season,” an eight week contest in which children from all over the city joined in an annual contest run by Johns Hopkins to see who could catch the most fireflies. On clear evenings (apparently it was also a rainy summer that year as well), kids would run all over the Homewood campus with jars and nets, bagging as many blinking bugs as possible. They were paid 30 cents per hundred captured and managed to collect a grand total of 217,000 fireflies (worth $620 at the time, $5,012 in today's money). The lightning bugs went on to help with research and the children used their winnings to fund fun for their remaining weeks of summer.
