German Christmas Market Pictures

By Sarah D.

As you walk along the promenade, a sweet aroma slowly joins the brisk air and suddenly you are transported to the bustling streets of Munich, Rotenberg, or one of the many German cities that host a Weihnachtsmarkt, or Christmas Market. The cozy little wooden cottages selling goods create an Alpen atmosphere and the scent of roasting bratwurst beckons you into the large heated tent now covering most of West Shore Park.

Once inside, you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the holidays with a European twist. Gaze through delicate glass tree balls, gather some new wall art and wool scarves, or venture to the back of the tent (where no pictures are allowed... sorry) to a section dedicated to handmade German ornaments, smokers, nutcrackers, and wooden Christmas Pyramids that move by the wind produced from candle flames. To get a full German experience, grab some Gluhwein (spiced wine), currywurst, a pretzel, a cone of toasted almonds and settle in at the picnic tables set up in the middle of the tent.

Tomorrow, December 1st marks the official grand opening of the Market and it will run through Christmas Eve. Enjoy this unique holiday experience while it lasts!
