The Raven and Baltimore's Poe Sights
The new John Cusack movie "The Raven" opens this Friday (April 27th). To recreate Edgar Allen Poe's 19th Century Baltimore, producers chose to film in Belgrade, Serbia and Budapest, Hungary. Why not Baltimore guys? While they may have dropped the ball on the filming location, the movie should inspire much more interest in the poet (despite the fact that the storyline is complete fiction). That, in turn, should translate into more interest in the Poe Sights around the city. If you want to get a jump on all those tourists, here are a few of the sights to check out:
Poe House and Musuem - This was the home to Poe and his family in the 1830s. One odd thing to be seen in the museum is a lock of Poe's hair. 203 North Amity Street.
Poe Grave -Located in the rear of the Westminster graveyard downtown, this is the original resting place for Poe's body. 519 W Fayette Street.
Poe Memorial - Located in the front of the Westminster graveyard downtown, this monument contains Poe and his immediate family. His body was moved here in 1875. Poe's birth-date is actual inscribed wrong. He was born on January 19th, and not the 20th as the stone reads. 519 W Fayette Street.
Horse You Came In On Saloon - Said to be the last known place that Poe was seen alive and sane, this Fells Point saloon is one of the oldest in the country. While they claim to be the oldest in existence in the country, many lists have them at #6.
Latrobe House- Located in Mount Vernon, this building was the starting point of Poe's career. It was here that he won a writing contest which awarded him his first pay for writing...an impressive $50. One of the three men awarding the prize was Benjamin Latrobe's son, John H. B. Latrobe. 11 E Mulberry Street.
